Extended Ecologies investigates how immersive and surround media can be used to translate the exigencies of material experiences, spaces, places. Specifically interested in the intertwined urgencies of ecology and migration between Egypt, North Africa and central Europe, the techniques and tools known as 'extended reality' are explored in Extended Ecologies. Media of virtualization are here activated in ways that increase awareness of and help people better care for real, physical environments, their crises and conflicts.
As a joint program between Medrar Contemporary Art in Cairo and the Critical Media Lab Basel, the project aims to create and reflect poetic, healing and critical examinations of media and conditions of communication and connection between peoples, communities and cultures under the pressures and changing dynamics wrought by globalization and climate change.
